Surgery
There are usually two types of treatments for most conditions, conservative care and surgery. For many injuries, illnesses, and problems, conservative care is tried first and works for many people. Surgery is usually considered after conservative care if either conservative treatments fail to provide relief or if surgery is deemed the best treatment at that time. This varies with each patient depending on many factors. Surgery is sometimes elective and sometimes an emergency need. Emergency surgery is usually for those conditions that need to be treated quickly for best results, such as fractures, tendon ruptures, trauma or other similar reasons. Elective surgery means that the physician and patient decide on when the surgery would be best for their circumstances, but does not need to be performed immediately. Please remember to discuss risks, benefits, and alternatives for each surgery and to discuss all conservative treatments before surgery.
