Flat Feet
Normal arches begin to appear during childhood and progress to a normal height during the teenage years. When the arch lacks this normal development, foot remains “flat” on the ground and can cause discomfort and decreased ability of the foot to function properly. There are many causes of this condition, the most common is genetics. Another cause of flat feet is the decrease in arch as one gets older. This may be caused by loosening of the tendons that hold up the arch, change in structure of the foot, or injury.

Treatment usually consists of custom arch supports (“orthotics”) or a brace to hold up the arch and prevent collapse. In certain situations, a surgery may be indicated to realign the tendons and bones. In younger individuals and certain adults, a new surgery may be preferred that inserts a small device into the joint that prevents the foot from collapsing, called a “subtalar arthroereisis”.  I have performed this surgery well with excellent results. Ask about the DVDand brochures in my office for before and after pictures.

Orthotics
Orthotics are custom arch supports used for many purposes, including collapsed arches, tired feet, heel pain, and others. We specialize in true custom orthotics made from a mold of your feet.  Our specialty has extensive training in proper orthotic casting, adjustments, and fitting. We make necessary adjustments and modifications to bring the foot and ankle into proper alignment and take pressure off certain areas. Properly made custom orthotics promote better foot and ankle function and decrease abnormal stress placed on the foot and ankle.
